Day 2: Playa Los Muertos: Your Gateway to Adventure and Stunning Sunsets

If you are like me – you’re a beach lover! When you reach Los Muertos Beach, choose a spot at an outdoor table in the shade of an umbrella, or rent a hammock and enjoy the beach for awhile, perhaps while sipping on a cool drink. Take a refreshing swim in the water or just enjoy the scene: para-sailers dip and dive overhead and the occasional sailboat makes its progress across the bay while children play in the sand.

Los Muertos Beach isn’t your typical lie-flat-and-bake destination. This vibrant stretch of sand is where the action is! Forget sunbathing for now (though there’s plenty of space for that too), because Playa Los Muertos is all about creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Enjoy a little bit of adrenalin-pumping fun? Check out the wide variety of Water Sports Puerto Vallarta offers.

Gear up for adventure with the on-beach vendors who can set you up with jet skis and surfboards. Carve up the waves or feel the rush of a high-speed jet ski ride. Feeling a little more zen? Paddleboards are also available for a serene exploration of the coastline.

Whale Watching, Snorkeling & Los Arcos:

Are you looking to venture further out?

Boat trips launch right from Los Muertos Pier, whisking you away on unforgettable adventures. Imagine the thrill of spotting majestic whales breaching in the distance, or the awe-inspiring underwater world teeming with colorful fish on a snorkeling trip. The stunning rock formations of Los Arcos are a popular destination accessible by boat, offering incredible snorkeling opportunities.

And if you happen to go to Puerto Vallarta in January and February you may see the Humpback whales which migrate through the warm waters of Puerto Vallarta’s ocean from December to March, with the best time to see them being January and February timeframe. While whales can sometimes be seen as early as November or as late as May, the migration season typically runs from December through March.

We’ll delve deeper into these amazing excursions in a later post, so stay tuned!

Spontaneous Fun & Killer Sunsets:

Los Muertos Beach embodies the spirit of carefree fun. Whether you’re building sandcastles with the kids, taking a refreshing dip, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, this beach is all about embracing the moment. And let’s not forget the sunsets! Playa Los Muertos boasts some of the most spectacular sunsets in Puerto Vallarta. Picture yourself sinking your toes into the warm sand, cocktail in hand, as the sky explodes with vibrant colors – the perfect ending to a day of adventure.

Vidanta Resort: Luxurious Escape or Kiddie Paradise?

Vidanta definitely lives up to its name, which translates to “The Giver of Life.” We stayed in a gorgeous Grand Luxxe room with a private pool – a huge hit with the kids! The resort offered everything you could ask for: sparkling pools, pristine beaches, delicious (albeit pricey) dining options, and even grocery stores for in-room meals.

Here are some highlights:

  • Family-Friendly: Multiple pools with dedicated areas for kids, a supervised kid’s club, and even poolside water aerobics for the whole family.
  • Relaxation Stations: Pampering spas for a well-deserved escape (though that hot tub is still missing, Vidanta!).
  • Activities Galore: On-site water park, beach volleyball, fire dancing shows – there’s something for everyone.
  • Convenience is King: Valet service, taxi stands, and even shops within the resort make everything a breeze.

Now, a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Price Point: Vidanta isn’t exactly budget-friendly. Food and drinks can be expensive, but the grocery store helps.
  • Timeshare Trap: Be prepared for a high-pressure sales pitch. We politely declined (and scored a free breakfast buffet!), but be warned.
  • Limited Exploration: Getting off the resort requires taxis or a longish beach walk.

Day 5 Itinerary: Aquaventuras Water Park

A dream come true! We swam with dolphins at Aquaventuras Park, followed by some splashy fun on the water slides.

Aquaventuras Park wasn’t just a water park; it became a treasured memory for our entire family. The highlight, without a doubt, was the dolphin encounter. We were greeted by a team of friendly and knowledgeable trainers who made us feel comfortable and excited. They shared fascinating facts about the dolphins, their playful personalities shining through.

Then came the moment we’d all been waiting for: swimming alongside these majestic creatures. The dolphins were incredibly gentle and interactive, gliding through the water with incredible grace. They responded with playful clicks and whistles, their joy contagious. My kids were mesmerized, their faces lighting up with pure wonder as they interacted with the dolphins.

It wasn’t just about swimming, though. The trainers created an educational experience, teaching us about dolphin communication, behavior, and the importance of conservation. We left Aquaventuras Park not only with exhilarated hearts but also with a newfound appreciation for these incredible animals. It was a truly unforgettable experience that we’ll cherish forever.

Imagine paddling out to these majestic rock arches, then diving in to a world unlike any other.

A Feast for the Eyes:

Beneath the crystal-clear water lies a kaleidoscope of color. Coral reefs in stunning shades of pink, purple, and yellow provide a habitat for a dazzling array of tropical fish. Schools of brightly colored fish flit amongst the coral, while graceful butterflyfish and angelfish glide effortlessly by. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident moray eels peeking out from the crevices, or the playful trumpetfish with their elongated snouts. Sea turtles, majestic and graceful, might even make an appearance, leaving you awestruck by their prehistoric beauty.

Best Beaches in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Playa del Amor (Islas Marietas)

Screenshot 2024 03 08 at 9.07.47%E2%80%AFPM

Best hidden beach & wildlife watching

The Marietas Islands are a wildlife-rich archipelago off the coast of Mexico that has recently become a popular tourist destination. To protect the environment, authorities strictly limit the number of visitors allowed each day.

One of the islands’ main attractions is Playa del Amor, a secluded beach nestled inside a volcanic crater. However, only 116 people are permitted to visit this beach daily, so booking a tour in advance is essential. All tours and permits must be obtained through a certified company like Ecotours de México.

The Marietas Islands are a UNESCO biosphere reserve and offer excellent snorkeling, diving, and bird-watching opportunities. Visitors can expect to see giant mantas, sea turtles, blue-footed boobies, and many other bird species. The islands are located about 22 miles west of Puerto Vallarta and 6 miles southwest of Punta de Mita.

Playa Majahuitas

Screenshot 2024 03 09 at 8.43.47%E2%80%AFPM

Best beach for snorkeling

Playa Majahuitas is a great alternative for snorkeling if you can’t visit Islas Marietas. The calm bay with clear water offers excellent visibility for spotting colorful fish like parrotfish and angelfish. You can even explore small caves while snorkeling.

Besides snorkeling, the beach itself is a relaxing getaway with golden sand, a jungle background, and a quiet atmosphere. If you have your own gear, you can reach the beach by water taxi from Puerto Vallarta’s pier. Alternatively, you can join a tour that includes transportation and equipment rentals.

Playa Palmares

Screenshot 2024 03 09 at 8.48.25%E2%80%AFPM

Best sustainable beach

Playa Palmares, located about 4 miles south of Puerto Vallarta’s tourist area, offers a pristine beach experience. Unlike some other beaches, Palmares boasts clean, clear water year-round due to its distance from rivers.

This eco-friendly beach is even a Blue Flag beach, meaning it meets strict standards for water quality, cleanliness, safety, and services. While amenities like restrooms and parking are available, the main draw is the beautiful, calm water.

Sayulita

Screenshot 2024 03 09 at 8.52.39%E2%80%AFPM

Best beach for families

Sayulita, a laid-back surf town 25 miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta, is a great family beach destination. With calm swimmable waters, surfing lessons for all ages, and plenty of outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone.

You can go surfing, horseback riding, kayaking, visit a turtle sanctuary, or hike to secluded beaches. For a relaxing time with the kids, there are small beaches with gentle surf accessible by a dirt road north of the main beach. Sayulita is easily reachable by car or bus from Puerto Vallarta.

Punta de Mita

Screenshot 2024 03 09 at 8.53.40%E2%80%AFPM

Best beach for surfing

Punta de Mita, a peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta, is a great spot for beginner and intermediate surfers. The area offers long rideable waves, surf lessons, and board rentals. Popular beaches for beginners include Playa El Anclote and Stinky’s. More experienced surfers can head to El Faro, La Lancha, and Punta Burros.

Even if you’re not a surfer, Punta Mita has something to offer with its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere. If you’re in Playa El Anclote, check out Tuna Blanca for delicious seafood.

The Verdict: Relaxation and Fun for All Ages

Vidanta Resort offers the perfect blend of relaxation and family fun. We made countless memories, from lounging by the pool to exploring the vibrant city. If you’re seeking a luxurious escape with plenty of activities, Vidanta is a great choice. Just be mindful of the budget and the timeshare sales tactics. But hey, who can resist a free breakfast buffet, right?

P.S. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, swimsuits, and your sense of adventure! Puerto Vallarta awaits!

Bonus: Grab Your Free Packing Guide!

If you can believe it, we went on vacation for 17 days and only used carry-on luggage. 1x per person. Of course, we had to do laundry but not packing so much meant not paying extra on airline tickets.
