Commencing Your Journey towards Decluttering For Productivity Journey

1. Visualize Your Ideal Life

Before you start decluttering, take a few moments to visualize your ideal life. What does a clutter-free life look like for you? How would it feel to live a more organized, purposeful life? Writing down your vision can serve as motivation during your decluttering journey.

This is a perfect time to time, if you haven’t already to create a vision board.

2. Start Small and Take Baby Steps

Decluttering your life is a major undertaking. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, divide the process into manageable tasks. Focus on one small area at a time. This could be a particular room in your house, your email inbox, or a specific category of items like clothes or books.

Pro Tip: Donate used books, toys, and even books to local shelters or a charity of your choice.

3. Ask the Right Questions

As you go through each item, ask yourself if it brings you joy or serves a purpose. If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go. Don’t hold onto items out of guilt or because you “might need it someday”. Remember, the goal is to surround yourself with things that add value to your life.

4. Kitchen

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, so starting here can have a significant impact. Start by clearing out your refrigerator, getting rid of expired food and condiments. Then, systematically go through your cabinets, pantry, and drawers, discarding items you no longer use or need.

5. Bathroom

A clutter-free bathroom can make your daily routine more efficient. Start by clearing out your medicine cabinet, checking expiration dates on medications and personal care items. Next, tackle the drawers and cabinets, discarding any old or unused items.

6. Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Begin by removing items that don’t belong, then clear off surfaces and organize your items into categories. Get rid of any clothes that no longer fit or that you haven’t worn in a while.

Pro Tip: Grab these clear bins and label them with each family member so that at the end of the week, month or quarter you can ask your family members to either put the items away OR to donate. I find that often if they haven’t come looking for it, chances are they don’t need it anymore.

7. Living Room

The living room is often a gathering place for clutter. Start by choosing a small area, such as a bookshelf or entertainment center, and work your way through the room. Be sure to declutter any unnecessary items and organize what’s left into designated zones.

8. Email

A cluttered inbox can be a major source of stress. Start by unsubscribing from newsletters or promotional emails you no longer read or need. Create folders or labels to organize important emails and delete or archive the rest.

Quick Tip: Use a Tool (email management system!)

  • Clean Email: Organise incoming emails, easily unsubscribe, and create automated rules to archive/delete or move to folders.
  • Mailstrom: Take actions on bundles of related emails to act on them as a group.
  • SaneBox: For personal use, this app separates high/low priority emails.

9. Social Media

Social media can be a significant time-suck and source of mental clutter. Consider decluttering your social media apps by unfollowing accounts that don’t bring you joy or add value to your life. You may even want to consider taking a social media detox.

I had to hit the delete button on FB completely. It became a real driver of my anxiety and self-doubt. It had to go! It was easier than I thought. I kept IG but I mainly use IG for blogging and rarely do I see the same types of posts you would on FB. Yay for those complicated algorithms!

10. Digital Files

Over time, your computer or smartphone can become cluttered with unnecessary files, apps, and photos. Regularly go through your digital files, deleting what you don’t need and organizing what you do.

There are several reliable software options available that can help you clean up and manage files on your computer efficiently. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. CCleaner: One of the most popular tools for cleaning potentially unwanted files and invalid Windows Registry entries from a computer. It’s user-friendly and can help you remove unused files, clear your browsing history, and manage startup programs.
  2. BleachBit: This is a free tool that comes with a range of features to help maintain privacy and free up disk space by removing unused files. It can clean up cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, and shred temporary files.
  3. Glary Utilities: Offers various powerful tools to fix, speed up, maintain, and protect your PC. It includes features for cleaning common system junk files, as well as invalid registry entries and Internet traces.
  4. Advanced SystemCare: This is an all-in-one yet easy-to-use software to clean, optimize, speed up, and protect your PC and your privacy. The enhanced system can clean up more large files, redundant registry entries, and completely uninstall unwanted programs.
  5. Wise Disk Cleaner: It can clean temporary files, history, cookies, and autocomplete form history of Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari browsers. It can also defragment your disk to improve performance.

Before downloading and using any software, ensure it’s from a reputable source to avoid potentially harmful software. Also, it’s good practice to create a restore point or back up your system before performing any cleaning actions.

Beyond Physical Discover Decluttering for Productivity

11. Declutter Your Mind

Just as important as decluttering your physical space is decluttering your mind. Regularly practicing mindfulness and meditation can help clear your mind of unnecessary worries and distractions, promoting mental clarity and peace.

12. Declutter Your Schedule

A cluttered schedule can lead to stress and burnout. Evaluate your commitments and obligations, removing any activities that don’t align with your priorities or values. Learn to say “no” to things that don’t serve you.

So Final Thoughts on Decluttering for Productivity…

Decluttering your life is a journey, not a destination. It’s about creating an environment that supports your goals, values, and well-being. Remember to be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way. With time and persistence, you can transform your life, reduce stress, and boost productivity through the power of decluttering
